About the Country Climate Ambition Project

Pathways for achieving high ambition NDCs and global climate goals

With the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake, which demonstrated the world is not on track to reach the climate goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C, and with continued growth in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, a real urgency exists to halt and reverse emissions increases and to achieve significant reductions over the next decade.

Under the Paris Agreement, individual countries must periodically review and update their national pledges, or Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), in line with the long-term global climate goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C. The ongoing third NDC cycle of ambition enhancement offers an opportunity for countries to set the highest possible ambition within their individual context through absolute emissions reduction targets that cover all GHG emissions from all sectors of their economies.

The Center for Global Sustainability (CGS): Country Climate Ambition Project presents a set of detailed, country-specific analyses in a consistent, robust, and integrated approach with the goal of informing individual country ambition and supporting the Paris Agreement’s NDC process. With in-depth assessments of key emitting countries, this Country Climate Ambition website provides the latest summary – with regular updates – of analyses on plausible, High Ambition country pathways that are based on CGS’s field-leading modeling, data-driven empirical analyses, deep country knowledge, international research collaboration, and strategic policy engagements.
